Etiquette is not just about being prim and proper; it's about making a positive impact on those around us! In this article, I've compiled the top three main aspects of etiquette that will help you shine in any situation.
Understanding the Power of Politeness
Discover how a simple "please" and "thank you" can transform your interactions and leave a lasting impression. Politeness is contagious, and it costs nothing to be kind! We often believe that we have been brought up well enough and therefore, we don't feel like we need etiquette lessons but you'd be surprised how much we don't know. How about considering some additional etiquette knowledge? It cannot hurt to add some tools in our bag just to be safe :) My friend Hannah Gas, who is a French etiquette consultant once said that "we should be learning the rules and decide when not to use them" and I could not agree more. It is safe to say that you can only exude confidence if you know the rules but then decide depending on the situation if you should apply them or not.
2. Mastering the Art of Respect
Respect is the key to building strong relationships, both personally and professionally.
We need to understand here the concept of respect and self-respect. Don't fall for the idiotic so-called motivational quotes you see on social media that prone behaviours like "I will give my respect only to those who respect me". You see, your attitude towards others, is a reflection of your character. The logic is not "I respect you so you respect me" but rather "I respect myself and I will respect you the same because that is the type of person I am", knowing that self-respect will induce respect from others anyways, making you a strong figure whose character's roots cannot be shaken. This does not mean that you are without boundaries, but that is something I already talk about in this article.
Learn how to navigate different perspectives, embrace diversity, and create a harmonious environment for everyone. Know that you can understand and therefore respect someone else's different perspective without adhering to it.
3. Navigating the Digital World with Grace
Having a screen behind which we can hide isn't an excuse for misconduct, the people on the other side of your screen are still human beings. It's crucial to understand the do's and don'ts of online etiquette. From email communication to social media interactions, there are many great tips to help you maintain a positive online presence and avoid any digital faux pas. I am not a total anti-technology person, I believe the world evolves and we must evolves with it. Just as etiquette does. The secret to do it with no harm is in finding balance. For the use of smartphone for instance, we know how time consuming it can be if we don't discipline ourselves but it is such a useful tool nowadays that we cannot completely do without it. The key is to always see these tools for what they are: just tools. The smartphone should be our "slave" and not the other way around. Make sure to stay polite when interacting with people online and to put your phone down when surrounding people in real life.
So, whether you're attending a fancy dinner party, collaborating with colleagues, or simply engaging with others online, knowing the etiquette rules will elevate your social game and make you stand out.
