Today, I would like to delve into a topic that has been on my mind lately – the trend of "old money" that seems to have taken the internet by storm.
I must admit that while the "old money" trend has gained immense popularity, it has also brought about a certain level of confusion and I'll tell you what I mean by confusion in a moment.
But first let's explain what is this trend about exactly... "Old money", according to the Oxford dictionary, refers to "wealth that has been inherited rather than earned". Although, the craze isn't really about the wealth per se but more about the aesthetic affiliated to the old money crowd: the classic outfits, the hobbies, the homes... There is a certain style but also a certain way of living that emulates the values and principles that they all have in common. However, it is the style that is being mass reproduced.
Now, here is what I meant by "confusion": many content creators tend to mix attributes of jet setters with those of the old money crowd who tend to prefer the timeless and quiet elegance rather than the screaming logos of overly known luxury brands, not understanding that it isn't about showing off wealth through brands or lavish lifestyles, blurring the lines and diluting the true essence of the "old money" style. Consequently, it can sometimes "cheapen" the overall aesthetic, leaving us yearning for a more authentic representation.
I have mentioned it earlier, it is crucial to acknowledge that elegance is not merely a style or a fashion statement; it is a complete way of life. It encompasses a set of values, traditions, and a refined approach to living that extends far beyond appearances. Unfortunately, this aspect often gets overshadowed in the pursuit of emulating the external aspects of the old money lifestyle.
Nevertheless, I am happy to witness the growing interest in timeless and quiet elegance. It warms my heart to see more individuals, especially from the younger generation, aspiring to dress in a manner that exudes sophistication and class. I do not know why exactly there is this sudden interest for it but my theory is this, trends come and go and inspirations alternate from neglected to neat, from homeless to bourgeois (will all remember this horrid trend that consisted of dressing like you sleep under a bridge). This shift towards appreciating the beauty of simplicity and understated charm is a step in the right direction. Hopefully, we won't switch back too fast into trends that glamorise vulgarity and sloppiness...
Here are a few examples of the old money style found on Pinterest:
I'll never stress enough that elegance is not solely about the clothes we wear or the accessories we adorn ourselves with. It is a reflection of our inner selves, our values, and the way we carry ourselves in the world. It is about embracing a mindset that values substance over superficiality, and character over material possessions.
Luckily for you, I used to have an in-depth programme that would provide all the knowledge to develop the skills you need, this programme is no longer delivered through consulting however, it will be available in a comprehensive book I am currently working on. Since it should be released soon, don't hesitate to subscribe to get an alert whenever it is out or to follow me on Instagram to stay informed.
Wishing you all a day filled with grace, refinement, and the pursuit of true elegance.
With warm regards,
